The first continental congress

First Continental congress 1774

Coercive acts like Boston port act, were called intolerable acts by the colonists, other acts are Quebec act that made Canada bigger by moving the border to the south, and the administration act that send people to England to be judge, but the one that was horrible was the Quartering act were colonist had to give a stranger that was a British soldier your home for them to live there, take from your food, and whats worst if you had a family you really did not know who was entering and sleeping inside your house.

Colonist fight against taxes

In the rural Massachusetts Colonist react with violence against the acts, lets remember they called them intolerable acts, because they were abuses to their privacy and freedom. The colonist with cloves and guns, were able to force the courts of law to shut down, they attacked and punish anyone who worked, help, or even talked of the government, the most common punishment was the tar and feather punish, they made you drink by force this mix of tar and it is said it was hot, so it was such horrible punishment, that British were afraid of working for the government, and no one mentioned the British government neither the parliament for a while, because they knew that a big punish they will have to receive for their actions.

The other colonies opposed the intolerable acts also, and in the fall of 1774 many delegates from all colonies except for Georgia, went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to make the first Continental Congress, were they voted what to do, and talked of every need and concern of every colony. In the Continental Congress Patrick Henry give a speech and this some words he said (in the picture):

Boston

20120914-223443.jpg

The Boston Tea Party, was a political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, a city in the British colony of Massachusetts, against the tax policy of the British government and the East India Company that controlled all the tea imported into the colonies. All started with the town shed act, dictated by the Massachusetts government, boston attacked with, violence and boycotts, and did not respect the act. The parliament dissolved the Massachusetts government eliminating colonial government freedom. The parliament in 1775 sent 4000 troops to Boston and and add a new act named, the Quartering act of 1775 were soldiers maintain colonist in order.

What happened?

Some colonist dress as mohawks attacked 3 east indian tea company ships, they were angry by the tax tea had, and since the Boston port act (the boston harbor was closed for smuggler tea and anything could enter) was still on, they attack these 3 ships and they throw to the sea, lots of British tea packages, and it was prohibited to use tea that touched sea water, the east indian tea company suffered big loss of product and money.

Boston massacre

Supposedly drunk colonist attacked some British guards with snowballs and rocks, the guards in the situation were nervous so they open fire directly to the colonist, this battle claimed 5 colonist who died in the shooting. This men were: Samuel Gray, Crispus Attucks, Patrick Carr, James Caldwell and Samuel Maverick. This new was published with a image of 5 coffins each one with the initials of one of the five men killed.

How did colonist protest against the British taxes?

20120913-223513.jpg

They made intellectual protests, they give speeches and try to make their opinion be heard, they drafted resolution like the virginia resolutions, this created a surge in political activity.
They also made economical boycotts, they attacked the east indian tea distributer, and throw many packages of British tea from their ships to the sea.
They also made violent intimidations, by attacking guards like in the Boston massacre were a mob of colonist attacked with rocks some British guards, this guards opened fire and killed five men, that were Samuel Gray, Crispus Attucks, Patrick Carr, James Caldwell and Samuel Maverick. Later on people lived with a fear of being killed, because any one who support or talk of the parliament suffer a punishment or even death.

Imposed acts

Stamp act: colonist thought this was good, because by this british will lower costs, but it only was a tax for every printed paper, or any paper will have a tax to pay. Later on colonists fight against it.
The sugar act: molasses had a tax also, this is a syrup provided by the sugar, this act was not new but now it was now, and had to be payed by every american colonists, this tax was suggested by George Grenville. Quartering act: it stated that every colonist had to support soldiers by giving them a place to sleep, and food to eat. Later on this tax become one of the coercive acts, or intolerable act, named like this by the colonists in 1765.

Soldiers take advantage

The quartering act of 1765 was a coercive act, were people had to give their house to a soldier, but soldiers since they were payed badly started taking some advantages. They already ate and live for free, but since they had a family to support they had to take the colonist jobs, like farming cause in the american colonist, farmers and merchants were rich. Soldiers had to salaries army, and the job they had the opportunity to get. The colonists were angry they were losing their jobs. From here they protest saying that is not fair taxation without representation, they wanted to chose what taxes to pay.

Colonist fight, against British

20120913-213734.jpg

The American Colonists used some Enlightenment ideas from Europe that are the following:- life-property and liberty.
John Lock a very important character in the American revolution discussed that the government existed for the good of the people and if the government isn’t good, people have the rights to stand up against it. A Virginia representative called Patrick Henry use the enlightenment ideas to draft a radical document called the Virginia Resolves. This resolves were presented on the House of Burgesses in May 30,1765, in which only 4 were accepted( the other two were to radicals).
The newspaper published this important event, but this caused many problems cause they published the 6, including the radicals. This inspired 8 other colonies to draft more resolves. All this had consequences, the colonists violently protested the stamp act.

The stamp act affected everyone. After the act was posed Colonist start working together and created the American unity. Those who opposed the British taxes were called the “Patriots”. This Patriots had an association called the Sons of Liberty, the leader was Samuel Adams.
This people will tar and feather all tax collectors. Thomas Hutchinson denounced the attack toward the tax collectors. A Massachusetts Governor house was burned and after this no one wanted to be a tax collector, People were afraid of being killed.

Some of the colonial leaders were against taxes but they fear England and Colonists. 9 colonies send delegates to the Stamp act congress in New York Congress in 1765. The member of the congress encourage a consumer boycott from all products coming from England. So they imposed an nonimportation agreement.this caused many problems because women start homespun. Women we’re known as the ” Daughters of Liberty”.
After this women occupied an important and very respected place in politics.
Parliament repeal the Stamp Act in 1766 and pass a law that they would know be able to tax the colonists.

British Government and The Colonial Government

20120830-233616.jpg

( The English first legislature)

It was divided into 1. Legislative parliament that was subdivided into House of Lords and House of Commons 2. Executive. Aristocrats were the privileged high class, they were part of the house of lords, they were not elected but they got the spot by heritage. The colonist government had 2 legislature, they also had an elected assembly and a council, tis council was elected by the governor and this spot was for life, meaning you were council until you died or until you retired. The colonist did not elect members from the British Parliament as a protest for the taxes, and also the British government was not democratic at all, because the high class percentage was lower, and they controlled Europe and the whole low class who were more of the percentage of the high class, and this was they thought that no men created equal as ” Lord North” said in 1770. (prime minister of England). The only thing these government had was that wealthy men or the high class were the ones who had the power, even on the same government.

Which are the main differences of the British and the Colonial Government?

20120830-233049.jpg
(The picture is the Colonial government and the Crown before the Stamp Act)

The colonial Government differ from the British Government because the colonist had a more formal style in their documents, while British Government had no formal style in their constitution. Another difference is that the colonial Government allowed two thirds of free colonial men with enough property to vote, it differs from the British because in England only one quarter of the population could vote. The colonist also lacked from aristocrats the once that controlled were the merchants and farmers, while in England aristocrats were the ones who control everything since they had the money they demand what they wish, and regret whatever they did not like.

Who are we?

20120830-220728.jpg

Hi world this is a little introduction of who we are, don’t worry the info you need will be posted next.
We are three adolescents who are working in a U.S History project, were we have to tell the world the facts of the American Revolution, and what we think of what happened. The Information that we will give comes from the best teacher of this class, her name is Ms. Touché, she knows every detail of U.S history, thanks to her, this is happening. I expect you enjoy this, and it helps you on your work and projects.

Why did the American Revolution happen?

20120830-220813.jpg
First we should know this war started by a battle for America between the French and British colonists, it happened in the Ohio River Valley. This war in Europe was called the seven (7) year war, by the fact it lasted 7 years. George Washington was the commander of the british colonists, by the years 1756-1757 British were losing war, because the French allied the Indians, who raid the frontier were many small villages were, they attacked there because they knew, that they where so far from society, that British could jot ask for help, they felt more comfortable to attack there also because there were less persons, and the Indians had weapons, but not guns. This attacks weakened the British, so between 1758-1759 British started a tactical counterattack were they blocked the French supplies boats, that brought food, ammunition, weapons, this forced Indians to retrieve since French could not maintain them. British were able to capture some strongholds near Saint Lauren River, by this they were able to attack Quebec, Canada in 1759, they also captured Montreal and the French governor was forced to give Canada to the British, later on all French stronghold surrender near the Great Lakes. British defeated French and with Spain these three countries sign the “Treaty of Paris” that established the end of the 7 year war, and peace between this countries.

20120830-221929.jpg

Causes of the rebellion.

20120830-222634.jpg

Taxes were the main reason, but they were imposed because Americans enjoyed life
they were protected from the French, and Indians, they had political rights, since they had the British government style, Americans enjoyed trades with Europe, by this British suffered many losses of money, since they had to pay those expenses that the Americans did not payed at all, they had to find a way to recover that money, so they imposed taxes to the Americans. They were upset they said they did not have the right to pay taxes unless taxed was imposed by their own government. By 1760 colonists protested against the imposed taxes, here its when The American Revolution starts, we can see how calm and how many peace Americans had, and when something that did not benefit them arises, they had to fight against it.
